Mint Hill Public Library

In 1950 the Mint Hill area originally received library service from the book mobile that came every Friday for one hour.  A local resident, Sara Wyche Higgins, contacted the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library to see if the Mint Hill area could have a branch library like Matthews and Pineville.  In August 1958 Sara received a call from the Charlotte library stating that the book mobile would be discontinued and wanted to know if a room was available to store books for community use in this area.  Officers of the Mint Hill Piedmont Area Development Association (PADA) donated $100.00 to secure a space. Several community volunteers gathered to build the first library which was located in a store front near Mint Hill Square (the corner of Lawyers Road and Highway 51).  As circulation began to increase, the Mint Hill Library moved to the old fire station on Highway 51.  After several more growth spurts the library is currently located in its fourth location at 6840 Matthews-Mint Hill Road.  A Grand Opening celebration was held on Monday, May 17, 1999.

The Mint Hill Library grew from a small store front that was approximately 10 feet deep to its newest location that measures 12,000 square feet.  The location houses a collection of print and audio materials that circulated more than 17,500 items in 2014 with 55.73% checked out by our patrons at the Express Check Terminals.  The Computer Learning Center (CLC) has 11 public computers and 2 express computers that are used daily.  The CLC is also used to teach computer classes to the public free of charge. There are many other programs that are offered on a weekly basis to all ages.  A few of these programs are story time for children, Paws Awhile Reading Sessions with trained service dogs, writer's workshops, book clubs, and 1 on 1 Tech Tutor Sessions.

The Mint Hill Library will undergo a few changes.  A Laptop Computer Bar will be added soon.  This addition will create more seating and add more electrical outlets for personal electrical devices.  The Young Adult Area will be modernized to create a more inviting study space for teens to meet and collaborate on group projects.  Visit us soon to see "What's happening at your library!"
