09.30.2020 Message from Mayor Brad Simmons

Sep 30th, 2020

Mint Hill Residents,

Last week, the Board of Commissioners saw presentations from two consultants for the Town's Land Use Plan update. The Board unanimously selected Merrick-Nealon as the consultant and directed the Town Manager and Town Attorney to negotiate a contract with a scope of services and costs to be approved by the Board of Commissioners. We will keep you updated as we move through the process.

The 2020 Census deadline has been extended to October 31. It is important that you take the time to complete your questionnaire online, by phone or on paper. In fiscal year 2016, North Carolina received nearly $24 billion through 55 federal spending programs guided by the data derived from the 2010 Census. On a per-capita basis, this is more than $2,000 per North Carolina resident, per year. In addition, North Carolina currently has 13 seats in the U.S. House of Representatives. We may gain an additional seat if the 2020 Census count is complete. In 2010, North Carolina likely missed gaining a congressional seat by only 15,800 people. You can complete the questionnaire, spending less than 10 minutes on what can impact your community in the next 10 years. If you have questions, visit or call the Census Bureau at (884) 330-2020.

COVID-19 is still a part of our lives. I encourage you to continue to social distance, wear your mask and wash your hands. We all need to be vigilant about slowing the spread.

As I drive around town, I have seen several scarecrows. I am excited about the number of people who are participating in this event. We will have almost 60 scarecrows around town at businesses and residences. A list with scarecrow locations can be found at COVID cannot stop our ability to have fun. Yesterday, clues were distributed to local businesses for the scavenger hunt. Look for clues at local businesses and on our social media throughout the month of October. Put all the clues together and tell us what we are describing. Submit your answer to All correct answers will be put into a random drawing to win $125.

Stay healthy, be counted and be on the lookout for scarecrows.

Brad Simmons
Mint Hill Mayor
