The Town of Mint Hill was in a unique position of establishing its own police department during 2003.  Since 1995, the town contracted with the City of Charlotte for police services.  Prior to 1995, Mecklenburg County Police provided police services for the town.  On September 26, 2002, the Board of Commissioners unanimously voted to establish the Mint Hill Police Department.  The department initially consisted of 22 sworn police officers, five police supervisors, an administrative assistant, and a police chief.  The department had eleven vehicles.

Currently, the Mint Hill Police Department serves approximately 20,000+ residents.  There are approximately 7,500 homes and nearly 600 businesses.  Over 100 businesses currently exist in Mint Hill.  Four schools are currently located within Mint Hill and a new high school is being built.  The current city limits consist of 25 square miles.  Interstate 485 opened three years ago and five exits are located within/leading to Mint Hill.

The Mint Hill Police Department now has 31 police vehicles, one police ATV, three military vehicles, one enclosed utility trailer, one mobile light-tower/generator, and one radar/speed-monitor trailer.  The police department now has its own radio-trunking system and a 400 ft. radio tower system.  Marked police vehicles are equipped with radar, in car video-camera systems, defibrillators (AED), mobile-data terminals with modems, stop-sticks (tire deflation devices), and 800 MHz mobile radios.

All uniformed officers are trained and issued a TASER (less than lethal) device.  Each officer is trained in CPR and AED (defibrillator) device use.

To better serve the people of Mint Hill, the Mint Hill Police Department just recently implemented a police dog (K-9) program and purchased two male German Shepherd dogs.  Both  police dogs are dual-purpose working dogs (patrol and narcotics).

Many of our employees are committed to serving the public in many ways.  Several of our officers are currently members of or have served in the armed services (military).  Since the start up of the Mint Hill Police Department in 2003, three of our officers have been deployed and served in Afghanistan or Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom.  Many of our officers serve as volunteer fire and EMS personnel for their communities, and several officers serve as church leaders or teachers as well.

               (Remember Their Sacrifice)

The quality of equipment used by the Mint Hill Police Department is far above other agencies for the time that Mint Hill PD has been in existence.  However, the greatest asset to our agency and the citizens of Mint Hill is our employees.  Each employee is committed to doing the very best he/she can with the desire to make a positive difference in each person's life with whom they come in contact.
