The Town of Mint Hill was in a unique position of establishing its own police department during 2003. Since 1995, the town contracted with the City of Charlotte for police services. Prior to 1995, Mecklenburg County Police provided police services for the town. On September 26, 2002, the Board of Commissioners unanimously voted to establish the Mint Hill Police Department. The department initially consisted of 22 sworn police officers, 5 police supervisors, an administrative assistant, and a police chief. The department had 11 vehicles.

Currently, the Mint Hill Police Department serves approximately 20,000 residents. There are approximately 7,500 homes and nearly 600 businesses. Over 100 businesses currently exist in Mint Hill. Five schools are currently located within Mint Hill. The current city limits consists of 25 square miles. Interstate 485 opened, which has five exits that are located within / leading to Mint Hill.
